Movie Review: Transformers

I had a chance to see Transformers at the Cinema last night. As I said to a friend of mine this morning; “Ultimate Baddassary” essentially sums up the movie; there really is no need for a lengthy review. But I did want to jot down a few notes –

The problem with Transformers is that it really wasn’t Epic, but at the same time it definitely makes my top 10.

The story wasn’t greatly developed and there could have been a lot more information. I think they provided just enough so you have an understanding of what’s going on but I can sense a sequel already to further develop the story.

The realism in the movie is weird. I say this because some parts we’re very well done. The scorpion fight scene in the desert with the tight and seemingly accurate military communication and the weapons and everything was amazing. Then you get into the movie and there’s just weird fruity aspects that really threw off the realism in the movie to the point where it was borderline cheesy. I just didn’t buy it.

A good example of what I’m rambling about — The whole Section 7 thing could have been a really neat concept. At first I’m thinking like a real government cover-up with these NSA types and it was going to be all cool. However, in my opinion the execution failed. They had John Turturro play the lead guy which did the part well but it added “lightness” to what was going on.

It’s sad too because they had Jon Voight play the Secretary of Defense, and in my opinion Jon Voight makes an excellent government type. If you remember he played ‘Thomas Reynolds’ an NSA director in Enemy of the State. Perfect.

Now I know that a movie based around a bunch of robots that turn into cars and things is not going to be hitting home with scary realism, I wasn’t hoping for the next ‘Inconvenient Truth’ or anything. As I said before it was just weird, One minute it was Black Hawk Down, the next it was Eight Legged Freaks. Maybe it’s a Michael Bay thing because The Island was sort of the same way.

Now for the good, and the reason why despite some complaints Transformers is now one of my favorite movies of all time.

The effects we’re beyond amazing. The action keeps you going through the entire movie. Once it got going it didn’t stop. The CG in Transformers has to be some of the best to ever hit the silver screen, everything looked really good and clean. Very high quality. My favorite transforming moment has to be the F-22 Decepticon - Starscream. The transition was so tight and perfect; it would be just flying along and then BAM!! just like that it slams onto the ground and starts blowing stuff away. All of the battle scenes in the movie were impressive, as I mentioned before the Scorpion fight scene in the desert is among my favorites, along with the high speed battle on the freeway, wow.

So anyways, if you haven’t seen Transformers yet, you need to. I’m highly considering going and seeing it again, and for me to see a movie in the theater more than once is very rare. I really doubt that the DVD will really do the movie justice when compared to the experience I just had.
